Butte College is set to break ground on a new 25,200-square-foot facility at its Chico Center this fall, significantly expanding its cosmetology and barbering programs. With a construction budget of $22.6 million, the new building will allow the college to triple enrollment in the program and introduce new career training opportunities.
The college currently houses its cosmetology and barbering programs in a leased classroom facility in Chico.
"The program has outgrown our current location," said Christian Gutierrez, public information officer for Butte College. "This new construction will allow us to better serve our students by increasing capacity and bringing the program on-site at one of our centers."
In addition to expanding its current cosmetology program from serving 60 students to 150 students annually, Butte College will introduce barbering, manicuring, and esthetician programs to meet industry demand.
The facility will be divided into two buildings—one dedicated to the cosmetology and barbering programs and another housing a science lab and large training room. The new space will feature a barbering lab, two cosmetology labs, a manicure and pedicure lab, an esthetician lab, and a general classroom. Additional amenities will include dedicated office spaces, a student lounge, a staff lounge, a maintenance area, and a client waiting area.
"The new facility at the Chico Center will also have a science lab and a large training room, allowing us to provide general education science courses here in Chico," Gutierrez added.
Construction will begin in August 2025. The first classes in the new facility are set to begin in January 2027.
